Join Deadpool and his new Bub as they disgrace the memory of Fox while picking up the MCU pieces! Find out more in our Deadpool and Wolverine Review!
Hey Deadpool fans, I know right, another superhero movie, like come on guys give us a fucking break. Seriously though this one is worth the watch, I mean would I lie to you… Anyway, I’m here today to tell you why you should go watch this movie as soon as inhumanly possible. No, Disney didn’t pay me (not as much as Hugh Jackman at least), but we do find ourselves in an odd place in superhero culture.
The ultimate team up.
The DC universe is being rebooted again, TV shows have slowly receded and Marvel has slashed their overpopulated franchise in a bid to return to form. Well ladies, gentlemen, and ugly hounds, buckle up because this is one hell of a ride you don’t want to miss. Let’s fucking go in our Deadpool and Wolverine Review!
Deadpool and Wolverine Review – Story
Before we get balls deep into this, let me be clear, this movie does not save the MCU. As much as Deadpool states, he isn’t quite Marvel Jesus but he does do what his moniker suggests, puts a foot in the right direction. Since we last saw our not so friendly neighbourhood Deadpool, he has turned in the suit and taken up a day job as a car salesman. His mid life crisis, caused by a break-up from Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) has led Wade to want more in life than just senseless killing.
I see you motherfucker, go watch the movie right now!
During a surprise birthday celebration for himself, Wade finds himself face to face with TVA agents (See the Loki TV series). They bring him in, sans terrible toupee, and a man aptly named Paradox says his universe is about to end. Cue some discourse about anchors and MacGuffins which sends the newly reinvigorated Deadpool on a mission to find a Wolverine. A hilarious montage follows with comic accurate and just plain comical Wolverines rejecting the request for help. This is easily one of the best parts in the movie, all to the tune of “The Power Of Love”, made famous by Back to The Future.
This scene just exudes cool.
Wade finally finds a gruffy, drunk Logan willing to help, albeit mostly against his wishes. The so-called worst-Wolverine ever has some serious baggage but the duo end up stuck together whether they like it or not. They find themselves stuck in the Void (also see the Loki TV series) where they must team up with an incredible amount of decent cameos in order to take down the villain of the realm, Cassandra Nova.
What has it got in its nasty little pocketses?
The twin sister to Charles Xavier, she was taken by the TVA as a child due to her immense power, Cassandra now rules over the void with her own team of possibly familiar superheroes. After a terrible attempt to take her down, Deadpool and Wolverine barely manage to escape her clutches, as Cassandra longs to add a Wolverine to her “collection”.
Nobody is leaving the cinema soft or dry…
Saying much more would contain way too many spoilers and I know both Ryan and Hugh would have my head if I ruined the movie for anyone. Let’s just say there are more surprises here than you can imagine but at the bottom of this story lies two men who just want redemption and the chance to be a hero.
Deadpool and Wolverine Review – Acting
The rivalry between actors Ryan Reyonlds and Hugh Jackman is so well known it would be amiss of me to say this movie does anything but enhance this epic relationship. Of course the core feature here is Deadpool and Wolverine which embodies their off screen fake feud in the best way possible. The Merc with the mouth still lives up to his name and we finally get a torn down Wolverine who is allowed to say “Fuck”. If you go for anything, then go for this perfectly matched buddy-cop type superheroes who both ironically just want to belong.
Enter Wolverine and Deadpool stage right.
Most of the main actors are all spoiler based so we can’t discuss here, but I can confirm, old and new fans alike will all have something to enjoy. The main villain Cassandra (Emma Corrin) is fantastic, sweet yet psychotic, she is happy in the void until this reckless couple show up. One of the only few negatives in this movie is that she is way underdeveloped and introduced haphazardly, a very Marvel-esque trope that has become commonplace over the last few years.
What do you mean you don’t like tea?
Deadpool and Wolverine Review – Visuals
Since Marvel secured the rights for X-men after Fox was bought by Disney, I think everyone was worried about the next Deadpool movie as swearing, brutality and general depravity isn’t in their wheelhouse. However, this was without a doubt bloodier, more disgusting and unbelievably crass that it tops the previous two films combined. A lot of scenes went even further than I thought they could get away with but each time it landed spectacularly, without fail, even if it erred to the side of dark humour.
The worst cameo ever?
This lends to the amount of gore both Deadpool and Wolverine take part in. From crotch shots, decapitations and even full body skinning, this has well and truly earned an R rating just from the bloodletting. The void looks just as good, if not better here, with a tonne of blink and you’ll miss it as Easter eggs for those hardcore fans. Every fight scene here is as epic and adrenalin fuelled as you would expect with some fantastic choreography. Not to mention a hilarious battle between Deadpool and Wolverine to the lovely notes of “You’re the one that I want” from Grease fame.
“Hi Deadpool here, just letting you all know this is Wolverines O face…”
Deadpool and Wolverine Review – Audio
Watching the hysterically funny Ryan Reynolds and the aggravated Hugh Jackman slice and dice to the sweet sound of Madonna’s “Like a prayer” literally can not happen anywhere else. Going along the theme of the previous instalments, this entry has its fair share of love ballads and other songs that only works in a Deadpool movie.
“Lady in Red” by Chris de Burgh, “I’m With You” by Avril Lavigne and “Glamourous” by Fergie are just some of the left field songs you can expect to hear. *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” is put to good use when it sets up the movie in the first scene showing Wade disgracefully dispatching a tonne of enemies. Composer Rob Simonsen finally gives Deadpool his very own superhero theme too, which is just as epic as it should be.
Deadpool and Wolverine Review – Conclusion
If the first Deadpool was a “Love Story” then this threequel is more than just a redemption for both titular characters. With outrageous jokes, cameos and action, Deadpool and Wolverine have lived up to their team-up movie that has been in the making for 15 years. Whilst a couple of story beats and the main villain is a bit light on, the serious moments for this risqué pair provides a deeper look into their motivations which is a nice change up from the rest of the ridiculous yet enjoyable movie.
The most under rated actor in the movie, Dogpool!
I don’t think this is a swan song for Deadpool or Wolverine, nor is it a serious introduction into the MCU. What Deadpool and Wolverine manage to do is perfectly cap off 20th Century Fox’s superhero run, ready to usher in a new era of mutants under the (hopefully) careful guise of Marvel and Kevin Feige.
So, why should you watch Deadpool and Wolverine?
- Love Marvel & superhero movies
- Incredible and hilarious cameos
- Heaps of gory action, comedy and a lot of heart
- You just want to hear Wolverine say “Fuck”
But why shouldn’t you watch Deadpool and Wolverine?
- Slightly undercooked Villain
- Haven’t caught up on the last 50 or so Marvel/Fox movies
- Not a fan of dismemberment
- Don’t like the word “Fuck”
