Astro Bot was released last week with enormous success and contained many surprises for all PlayStation fans. Now that the cats are out of the proverbial bag, in terms of unlockable characters, it’s time to take a closer look at some of the more unexpected and celebrated Bots Team Asboi chose for their roster of icons!

Before we begin, there are four honourable mentions that just couldn’t be left out of this article. Klonoa from the Phantasy Reverie series on the PS1 which was remastered a few years ago. Sackboy was the mascot for the PS3 era and had just as much charm as Astro Bot. Joker from the extremely popular Persona 5 and finally the cat from the critically acclaimed feline adventure, Stray.

Now that we have them out of the way let’s dig into the screws and bolts of the Top 10 Best Astro Bot Characters!

10. Crash Bandicoot

One of the original PlayStation Mascots, Crash Bandicoot made his debut in 1996 and spawned two direct sequels. Since then, countless spin offs, reboots and remakes have graced our screens with this crazy Australian marsupial and his friends. Whilst his IP may be owned by Xbox now, Crash will always be a PlayStation boy at heart.

9. Silent Hill 2 – Pyramid Head

Possibly the most iconic horror game villain is this character from Silent Hill 2. Whilst some may think of this series as a Resident Evil clone, a lot more considered this a deeper look into despair. Either way the remake for Silent Hill 2 draws near so this won’t be the only time we see this guy’s pointy head this year.

8. Katamari Series – The Prince

This quirky series has been on every console generation since the PlayStation 2. Featuring a large ball that you roll around and absorb objects, this was a huge sleeper hit in Japan and eventually all over the globe. With nearly 20 entries into this series including remasters, it would be unkinglike not to include this ball of…stuff.

7. Castlevania Series – Richter Belmont

The oldest series on this list is the classic vampire hunting games that are widely known and have gone through dozens of entries, reboots, remasters and re-releases. However, here we celebrate the first Castlevania that was featured on a Playstation console. Symphony of the Night was released in 1997 and whilst the main protagonist is Alucard, you can unlock Richter as a secret playable character which seems very fitting for his place here.

6. Killzone – Helghast Soldier

One of the biggest FPS during the PS2 and PS3 generations was the Killzone series. After the first became a success in 2004, it spawned two direct sequels and a spin off on the PSP. We saw another entry as a PS4 launch title that whilst looked visually impressive at the time, it fell short of expectations. So the developers ,Guerrilla Games, moved onto something new, a little game called Horizon Zero Dawn. Hence why this Helghast soldier rightfully earned his place in this list.

5. The Last Guardian – Trico

Team Ico was relatively short lived for a game developer to release, not one, not two but three incredible and iconic games. Whilst the PS2 game Ico may have been a huge influence on the gaming community, Trico is definitely a character that is more iconic. You won’t find many games that get you to solve puzzles with a giant half dog-half bird animal. Tricos’ design is truly unique and Astro Bot has done justice to the creature which also represents all of Team Ico’s accomplishments.

4. Demon’s Souls – Knight

This is where it all started, the first Soulsborne game from the legendary Hidetaka Miyazaki. Thanks to this PS3 classic, we have amazing titles like Bloodborne and Elden Ring, not to mention how the gameplay has filtered into action RPGs of late providing incredible entries such as Stellar Blade and Black Myth Wukong. This even got a full remake as a PlayStation 5 launch title that proved just how remarkable Demon’s Souls still is.

3. Okami – Ōkami Amaterasu

Largely regarded as one of the most artistic and gorgeous games of our time, this Japanese mythology based game has been a fan-favourite since its PS2 release in 2006. Strangely enough, despite its acclaimed status, no true sequels have been developed apart from a spiritual sequel on the Nintendo DS. You can still play Okami HD on current consoles and still holds up to this day.

2. Metal Gear Solid – Gray Fox/Cyborg Ninja

You may be thinking why isn’t Solid Snake here? Well Gray Fox is actually the under-appreciated hero of Metal Gear Solid. He provided helpful intel and saved Snake’s butt more times than a box ever did during the Shadow Moses Incident. Let’s also not forget the incredible influence on modern gaming this series has had over the last 25 years thanks to Hideo Kojima. Plus his suit just looks awesome.

1. Polygon Astro (and all 300 bots)

Naming the top PlayStation character from the last 30 years is actually impossible, with so many varying opinions and just too many iconic characters. That’s why the last unlockable Bot you can get in Astro Bot is himself in the form of a PS1 Polygon shape. You receive this upon completing the final secret level of the game which comes with this outfit and a PS1 colour theme for your Duel Speeder. Because without the Playstation 1, none of these characters you see here would even exist!
